Stack Limit Holdem

Thanks to widespread television coverage over the past few years, no limit hold ‘em is a household term. However, ‘no limit’ is a misnomer. There obviously is a limit to what you can bet-it’s the amount of chips you have in your stack or the amount of chips that your poker online opponents have. You can’t bet more than what you’ve got on the table, and if you have them covered, you can’t make your opponents cough up more cash. A more appropriate term would be “Stack Limit Hold ‘Em”, but that just doesn’t have the same ring to it that “No Limit Hold ‘Em” does.

In cash games, the size of your stack makes a huge difference in how you’re going to play. With a larger stack, it can pay to be more aggressive, since you can bully smaller stacks out of pots and put other players stacks at risk.

Aggressive poker players, however, can run the risk of bigger losses. You may push your whole stack in with trip Aces, only to have another player draw out a nut flush and crippling your stack.

Smaller stacks have fewer options-small stacks run the risk of being put all in at any given time, so it pays to be a bit more selective about the cards you’re willing to play. Remember this when you play poker online.
